Sidney Oldall Addy

Career Lawyer / Antiquarian / Writer

Biography Addy was born in Derbyshire. An antiquary and man of letters, he earned his living as a solicitor and had a house in London. He seems to have written and published several folklore related articles including, 'Guising and Mumming in Derbyshire' in Journal of the Derbyshire Archaeological and Natural History Society, Jan.1907, Vol.29, pp.37-39 and 'A Glossary of Words used in the Neighbourhood of Sheffield...' (1888) London, English Dialect Society & Trübner, 1888, Vol.57 He wrote (and published) a good deal about vernacular architecture, folktales, etc. There appears to be a book about him and his family, written by Mary Golden Parkin Addy, (1858-?)(who was his wife), 'A miscellany: Sidney Oldall Addy and family' published by Roffey & Clark, Croydon, 1937 (a copy is held in the Bodleian Library). The notes on the OLIS record say, 'Consists of miscellaneous writings by the editor, her husband, Sidney Oldall Addy, and her daughter, Catherine Greaves Addy.'
