Anthony John Arkell

Career Religious / Academic / Antiquarian / Museum Professional / Colonial Servant

Biography Arkell served in the first World War in the Flying Corps/ Royal Air Force, joined the Sudan Political Service in 1920 and served in a series of political postings until the end of the Second World War. In 1938 he studied for the Diploma at the Pitt Rivers Museum. From 1948-1953 he was an archaeological advisor to the Sudanese government, and a Lecturer in Egyptology at University College, London. Curator of the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Antiquities at University College London from 1948-1963. From 1963 to 1971 Arkell was the Vicar of Cuddington in Buckinghamshire having obtained a D.Litt in 1955 from the University of Oxford.
