Career Antiquarian / Anthropologist / Archaeologist / Army / Writer
Biography Served in the British Army from 1845 to 1870s. Started collecting artefacts in the 1850s and loaned a large collection of archaeological and ethnographic specimens to Bethnal Green Museum and later South Kensington Museum from 1874. In 1884 this collection was given to the University of Oxford and formed the founding collection of the Pitt Rivers Museum. From the 1870s on he became increasingly interested in archaeology, carrying out many digs on his own estate in Dorset following his inheritance in 1880. After donating the first large collection to Oxford Pitt Rivers acquired and displayed a second collection at Farnham Museum, in Dorset.
