Mary Venables

Career Musician

Biography Nothing is known about this donor who also lived in Oxford except that it is not likely that they are the same person as the other Miss Venables as the address is different [this one lived on Cumnor Hill]. There is a Mary M. Venables listed in the 1901 census who was aged 45 born in Oxford and living in St Giles Parish Oxford 'living on own means' but it seems unlikely that she is the same person. A Mary Venables is mentioned in the Jackson's Oxford Journal of 7.10.1893 as a violinist playing at Wallingford Town Hall. The same person is mentioned in the same journal of 24.2.1900 and 16.6.1900 again as a musician. In the latter edition she is leading with the English Ladies' Orchestra.
