What are the most commonly occuring objects in the global Pitt Rivers Museum collections?
By far the most common are tools (nearly one in three objects in the Pitt Rivers Museum is a tool of some description). This is principally because of the high preponderance of archaeological stone tools however the collections contain many other types of tools as well. Another commonly occuring type of artefacts are ornaments and beads (which represent 14.6 per cent of the total). The third most common type of object are weapons of all descriptions, nearly one in every ten objects is a weapon.
All other objects represent less than 5 per cent of the overall collections.
Note: Many artefacts are classified as more than one type of object, for example a drinking horn would be classifled both as a vessel but also as food related.
