Ellen Ettlinger was born in Germany in 1902, but was forced to leave in 1938 because of Nazi persecution. She settled in Oxfordshire and lived there for the rest of her life. She had always been interested in German folk art, customs and belief and she transferred this interest to English folklore. She was also very interested in amulets and churches. She was a steadfast and distinguished member of the Folklore Society.
She donated a collection of pamphlets, folklore notes and photographs to the Pitt Rivers Museum which include a card catalogue systematically set out to demonstrate her intellectual interests. This site will examine those cards and pamphlets in detail and bring her collection and work to life.
